Winners of the 2011 Franchisor of the Year Awards

The winners of the 22nd bfa HSBC Franchisor of the Year Awards, supported by Express Newspapers, were announced at a glittering black tie gala dinner in front of nearly 300 of the UK’s franchise businesses and experts.

Five winners across three categories were selected following 15 finalist presentations to the expert judging panel in May. The winners, revealed at the Heritage Motor Centre, Warwickshire, were felt to bring to life the most entrepreneurial, ethical franchising in the UK today, regardless of business sector, size or geography.

Presented with awards on the night were:

Brian Smart, director general, British Franchise Association (bfa), commented on the winners: “This has been another inspirational year for franchising. Each year the awards unearth fantastic success stories and demonstrations of ethical franchising at work. Our judging panel were presented with some of the best examples of innovation, brand development and franchisee support that they have ever seen and it has been a privilege to recognise these truly outstanding franchisors. Each of our winners is a credit to the sector.”

Gold – McDonald’s Restaurants 

McDonald’s Restaurants is the biggest family restaurant business in the world, serving over 3 million customers a day in the UK alone.

Dean Chapman, head of franchising and field service, McDonald’s Restaurants, commented on receiving the award: “We are thrilled to be presented with such a prestigious industry award. The core of our focus is our franchisees and providing them with the right support, training and development opportunities so we can help them be the best and set the standard across our industry. Winning this award is a reflection of our dedication as a team to being a leading franchisor and we are delighted this has been recognised amongst this influential audience.”

Silver – Home Instead Senior Care 

Home Instead Senior Care is the fifth largest care provider in the UK, which offers a range of one-to-one tailored services and home visits for the elderly.

Trevor and Sam Brocklebank, co-founders of Home Instead Senior Care commented on receiving the award: “Being recognised for our commitment to providing a top quality service to our franchisees, and therefore our clients, is such a fantastic reward. Each and every one of our franchisees is extremely passionate about delivering on our mission to be the UK’s most admired care company and receiving this award recognises our achievements in supporting them to do so.”

Bronze – etyres 

etyres is a leading online tyre retailer, operating a mobile fitting service.

Tony Bowman, director, etyres commented on receiving the award: “Building an innovative, efficient and sustainable business has helped us to attract and retain some fantastic franchise owners, which has been the key to our growing success as a Franchisor. Receiving this award is wonderful recognition of this, as well as a fantastic morale boost for our whole team.” 

HSBC Franchisee Support Award - Autosmart 

Autosmart was the worthy winner in the support category. Autosmart is the largest supplier of vehicle cleaning products to the car trade. They manufacture and sell a range of car valeting products through 110 exclusive area franchises.

Cathryn Hayes, head of franchising, HSBC, said: “Providing strategic support to franchisees is critical to being a good franchisor. As ever, judging the finalists was difficult but Autosmart demonstrated a level commitment to their franchise owners that really impressed us. They are a great example of how being innovative and not afraid to take risks to support franchisees can pay off.” 

Express Newspapers Brand Builder - Belvoir Lettings 

Belvoir Lettings, a specialist residential letting agent, providing property management, residential lettings and buy to let services for tenants and landlords in the UK.

Dorian Gonsalves, managing director, Belvoir Lettings commented on receiving the award: “Being named as Express Newspapers Brand Builder is such rewarding recognition of the hard work our whole team has put in to successfully transform our brand over the past year. This award confirms that our decision to invest in our brand despite a difficult economic climate was the right one. We are not only reaping the benefits as a business, but are delighted that our strategy has been acknowledged amongst our peers.”

Sean Hammond, head of franchising, Express Newspapers, said: “Belvoir Lettings demonstrated that brand building has a fundamental role to play in a franchisor’s growth strategy and can be delivered simply and effectively. The strength of a brand has become increasingly important as the economy has wavered and as a result it was a pleasure through the whole judging process to see so many franchisors working hard to find new and interesting ways to bring their brand to life.”

Brian Smart concluded: “We hope that these awards will continue to inspire the next generation of franchisors and franchisees, bringing fresh new thinking and best practice to the industry.”
