Case Study - Gillian and Ian Proudfoot

Why did you choose franchising?
I was looking for a change in career, working for myself but with the support and knowledge of a franchise.

What did you do before taking up the franchise?
I was the Area Manager for a meter reading company.

How did you raise the finance?
A small bank loan.

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?
I did the 2 day theory training at head office and then spent 3 days with an Agency Express owned operator learning the practical side of the job.  Ongoing support is available from HO as when required.

What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?
Getting the boards ready to go out for the following day; loading the van; covering a set area of between 50-70 jobs on a daily basis; checking stock levels; allocating and completing work; speaking to clients.

What challenges have you faced?
Our business almost doubled itself in a fortnight. We bought the North Lakes Territory as a resale (from our neighbour) and with a strong marketing drive and re-launch from head office we went from 18-85 clients in a very short period of time. We now employ 3 members of staff and have a multi-van operation.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying their first franchise?
Research the area thoroughly and understand fully what is involved in running and operating a franchise.

What are your plans for the future?
To continue to operate as Agency Express North Lakes with the aim to retire comfortably.

Would you do it again?
Definitely yes, it has been a great experience.
