Case Study - Joy Grant

Lutterworth businesswoman Joy Grant has won a national award after overcoming all the odds to succeed in business. Joy, who runs Bluebird Care in Market Street, won the "Spirit of Bluebird Award" after suffering key staff shortages. Despite this, Joy managed to keep her care at home business running and even to increase the number of carers she employs from 10 to 34 over the past two years.

After receiving her award from Bluebird Care Managing Director Paul Tarsey at the company's national conference, Joy said: "I am excited and surprised to receive 'The Spirit of Bluebird' award. Covering a diverse area from farms to high-rise flats, our staff work passionately and cheerfully to improve the lives of our customers.

"We work with Warwickshire Social Services and local Primary Care Trusts to ensure that our customers receive the best care possible. Looking to the future, we aim to grow and take on more staff which will be good news for the local economy."

The special award is inspired by the legendary Donald Campbell, who broke eight speed world records in the 1950s and 1960s – with both his famous car and speedboat bearing the Bluebird name.

Paul explained, "My family had close associations with the famous Bluebird CN7 land speed record car in the 1960s. Donald Campbell was a huge hero. His bravery and never-give-in spirit were a huge example to me as a young child and I grew up very much in awe of the man. It seemed only right that we should name our business in honour of a man who had been such an influence and who had a hugely positive outlook on life."

Joy was presented with the award at Bluebird Care's annual conference at the prestigious Marriott Hotel and Country Club in the Forest of Arden earlier this month.

Paul said: "We have retained our commitment to "good old-fashioned service" while at the same time becoming a modern, forward-thinking organisation of the 21st Century - always trying to stay one step ahead. We have also continued to invest in staff development and training, which means our customers get the very best service at all times."
