Case Study - James Carter

2005 brought Chem-Dry in the UK both a new owner and its 700th franchise licence sale, two acts that mark its success so far.

Chem-Dry, which delivers a carpet & upholstery cleaning service to domestic and commercial premises, also provides a market-leading fire, flood and accidental damage restoration service to the UK’s major insurance companies.

Since Chem-Dry arrived in the UK in 1987 the business has grown year on year, increasing both its franchise network and range of services. In early 2005 its strength in more than one market was recognised by new owner Homeserve plc; realising that Chem-Dry could contribute significantly to Homeserve’s plans to become the Leading Emergency and Maintenance Service to homes across the UK.

Former Distribution Manager James Carter purchased Chem-Dry’s 700th franchise licence in November 2005. The 27-year-old family man decided long ago that he wanted much more than a nine-to-five, office-based job with the same daily routine, and by the time James had secured his management post, he’d already started to consider what other options were open to him. With his family’s support, James now runs his franchise ‘Chem-Dry Total Care’ in East Sussex:

“I’ve always wanted to be my own boss and after researching all the options open to me, I decided on an established franchise operation that could offer me the support I needed during the early years of establishing my business. Chem-Dry also provides the stability of a reputable brand and plenty of variety in terms of the types of services you’re trained to provide.”

Most importantly James wanted to run a business that was people focused:

“Having the opportunity to meet new people every day was my priority when deciding what type of business I wanted to run. Chem-Dry offers the opportunity to work with both residential and commercial customers, as well as insurance policyholders.” There’s already so much to get involved in and it sounds like being part of the Homeserve group is an added bonus.”

Chem-Dry Master Franchise Director, Roger Annison, has watched the company grow over the last 12 years.

“Achieving our 700th licence sale is fantastic. The stronger the Chem-Dry network, the stronger the brand and the higher the service offered to customers and insurance policyholders. With Homeserve’s encouragement Chem-Dry is investing in new products and services, new business systems, and new approaches to delivering technical and business training. These will all be rolled out over the next 12 months, so we will be able to enter our 20th Chem-Dry year more confident than ever about the quality of our franchise package. These are exciting times.“
