Case Study - Frank McIsaac

Frank McIsaac has been an In-toto franchisee for nearly sixteen years. A kitchen fitter for the previous twelve years, Frank knew the industry well, was familiar with different product ranges and understood what customers were looking for in a new kitchen. “I decided the grass was greener on the other side of the fence and that it was time for me to look at having my own studio,” he explains.

Cushion of support

Naturally, he knew of In-toto kitchens, and was attracted by the combination of independently running his own business and what he describes as the ‘cushion’ of support provided by an established, high profile company such as In-toto.

“In-toto is a well known brand and as part of a large organisation has considerable buying power,” he explains. “Suppliers are much more tolerant than they would be of a small independent kitchen retailer. Also, as a franchisee I benefit from national marketing campaigns and the ongoing support of an experienced Franchise Manager. It’s great to have someone to bounce ideas off and a pool of expertise that you can tap into – most self employed people simply don’t have that luxury.”

Advice on latest trends

Despite his extensive experience, Frank says he found the training from Head Office really valuable. “I’m first and foremost a fitter,” he comments. “Selling doesn’t come naturally to me, and so I’ve appreciated all the support I’ve received. Even now, my Franchise Manager gives me advice and keeps me updated on the latest trends and ideas – it’s always a handy refresher, however successful you are.”

In 2004 Frank’s business had outgrown his initial premises and so when his lease ended, he moved to a new location, three times the size of his previous showroom and with its own parking.

Extensive new showroom

“I was looking to move for a couple of years, but it was important to me to make sure it was exactly the right place for us,” he says. “We’re in a really nice spot here, no longer in the middle of town – but that’s fine. We have built a reputation in the area and people interested in a new kitchen come and find us.” Since the move, Frank and his team are busier than ever, handling 18-20 enquiries a week.

“It’s all going really well,” he concludes. “We offer a diverse product range, from minimalist modern kitchens to country cottage styles and people are prepared to pay that bit more for a quality kitchen that looks the part in their homes.

I would definitely recommend the franchise route against going it alone. In-toto has given me the opportunity to build a satisfying, thriving business. Everyone works hard, but we’re very laid back and we enjoy what we do!”
