Case Study - Esmond White

EsmondEsmond White started his Minster Cleaning Services franchise in August 1996; today, annual turnover at the Kent branch is over £1million and Esmond has now recruited a general manger to help with the day-to-day running of his highly successful business.

When he left the army aged 39, Esmond made use of his people management abilities together with his degree in civil engineering to secure a job with a large engineering company. After ten years, and having risen to the position of managing director, he realised that the only way to have complete control over his destiny was to be running a company of his own which he could build for the future security of himself and his family.

Esmond identified franchising as offering the fastest and most reliable way forward and recognised that a management franchise would make the best use of his skills.  He wanted a low-tech business that wouldn’t go out of fashion, ideally a people business with excellent opportunities for growth.

At Minster he says that he discovered all this and much more, including comprehensive business support as he explains: “Minster provides all the help that franchisees need for the transition from employment to self-employment and they benefit from a wide range of ongoing services covering the day-to-day business activities such as operational management, administration, bookkeeping, IT and marketing as well as the complex fields of employment law and health and safety legislation; there is also help available from the large network of like-minded franchisees should you ever need it.

“Minster’s robust business model together with the expertise which I had developed during my time in the forces and in senior management was invaluable in building a large, thriving business.”

Esmond’s achievements were recognised when he was named as Minster’s Franchisee of the Year for 2009 – an award that is based on performance criteria including sales, new business acquisition and customer retention – after being runner-up for the accolade in 2004, 2005 and 2008. He has managed to maintain his £1million turnover through what may turn out to be the UK’s worst ever recession.

“The south east has certainly been hit, with large parts of the business community dependent on the financial services sector,” he says, “but the strength of the Minster brand – the Minster name and reputation – gives clients confidence and helps us to build long-term relationships. The disciplines of such an established franchise keep us focused on the needs of our clients and by offering a comprehensive range of complementary work, such as washroom and sanitary services, we can provide all cleaning needs from one reliable and trusted source.

“Now in our seventeenth year, we have established a track record for stability in the marketplace and an enviable reputation for high standards and flexibility. We have an excellent rate of client retention and we benefit from a healthy number of referrals, so we must be doing something right!”

Esmond’s enthusiasm and zest for life shows no sign of abating; the massive UK market for office cleaning and a large territory – from Dartford in the North to Folkestone in the south, and from Sevenoaks as far east as Margate, including the major towns of Gillingham and Maidstone – will give him more than enough expansion potential to keep him busy.
