Case Study - Emma Luxton
Starting out
At 22 Emma Luxton may be younger than the average business owner but coming from a family of self-employed people, she was always determined to work for herself. A degree in drama meant that when she came across Pyjama Drama, she was sure it was the perfect work solution.
Working for yourself
"All of my family are self employed and run their own businesses so it was a natural thing for me to want to follow in their footsteps. I love the fact that I can choose when I work and that every time I go to work it's different. I don't think I could have gone for a normal, everyday job, I like to challenge myself and with Pyjama Drama I'm teaching, working with children, being creative and running a business, that's much more interesting that sitting at a desk!"
Choosing Pyjama Drama
"I think if I hadn't done my drama degree I would probably have worked with young children, as a nursery nurse or as a primary school teacher, so this seemed to bring everything that I wanted into one job; it was perfect. Also, I like the variety of Pyjama Drama, so many children's activity classes seemed to be aimed at one area, such as dance or music, and this has all these elements and more, which I think is brilliant."
Working with children
"Children's imaginations are amazing, as we grow older we seem to stop using our imaginations as much but children are inspiring to work with. I love the fact that every session is different because the children's imaginations help shape the sessions."
Future plans
"My plan is to go for it and really build up Pyjama Drama in my area. Eventually I would like to bring Pyjama to all of Devon! I would also like to be able to offer Pyjama Drama to children with specialist needs and children with visual and hearing problems."
