Case Study - Chris and Gill Hutchings

Chris & Gill HutchingsFactfile:

  • Husband & wife franchisees
  • Operate from a shop front in Gloucester
  • Chris joined in Oct 2010 with Gill joining her husband in the business as a franchisee in April 2011
  • As at February 2016 they have around 535 clients with a fee bank of £413,000

Before joining TaxAssist, Chris was an FCCA-qualified accountant working in industry. Faced with redundancy, he decided to look into franchising. Gill was an occupational therapist working for the NHS and was also looking for a career change as she felt her role was static. Here she details their experience with TaxAssist.

What made you decide to join TaxAssist?
Chris had wanted to work for himself for a long time, and TaxAssist seemed to offer the opportunity to be able to do this in an industry he knew, with support from head office. We both went on a discovery day and we found that what was on offer fitted in with what we wanted. I initially helped Chris on my days off, but joined full-time three years into the business.

How is the training & support?
The initial training was very good and got Chris ready to go out there and start up. The ongoing training and support is also very good. It reminds us that we need to stop reinventing the wheel, and that we really just need to follow the proven system.

What have been the highlights of being a TaxAssist franchisee?
Owning a successful business that gives us the time/ flexibility (with the children) and income that we would not be able to get from being employed.

How have you been getting on? Have you learnt from any mistakes?
We are getting on well. Yes, lots of mistakes made and yes they have just made us stronger and more focused.

What would your advice be to anyone looking to join TaxAssist?
To get the processes, staffing and monitoring systems right from the beginning and have a very clear plan of what you are going to do as then it can be achieved.

How has running the business as a couple worked for you?
We get on very well as we both bring very different skills to the table. It is good that we can share the stresses and achievements of the business, but are also both able to not bring too much of the business home but at the same time can discuss things away from the office situation.

What are your plans for the future?
As of February 2016 we have found a shop front which we hope to be open by June 2016.
