bfa CHAIRMAN UNVEILS PLANS FOR THE FUTURE IN FRANCHISING
Media Release - 23 January 2004
New British Franchise Association (bfa) Chairman Brian Lewis today announced his plans for the next two years - plans he hopes will extend beyond his term.
In an industry worth £9.5billion annually and employing 326,000 people across the UK, franchising is big business - and Mr Lewis wants to see it grow.
“In the next two years my plans for the British Franchise Association include obtaining Investors in People status for the bfa, greater transparency in all our actions and improving the standard of franchising in the UK,” Mr Lewis said.
“I would also like to encourage good relations between franchisees and franchisors and ensure we have quantitative measurement processes in place to monitor our performance in helping companies within, and looking to join, the franchising industry. I would like to see our industry grow in its numbers and strength.”
Mr Lewis is joined by the bfa’s Board and Regional Chairs in the Association’s work to promote ethical franchising within the UK and ensure bfa members meet the highest standards of franchising. The new bfa Board and Regional Chairs are as follows:

The bfa is the home of ethical franchising, with a membership base of 248 franchise brands covering 13 industry sectors. For more information visit our website www.thebfa.org
- The British Franchise Association (bfa) evolved from the franchise industry itself in 1977 as the only voluntary accreditation body for franchising in the UK. Its remit was and is to develop and continuously improve the standards of good practice in franchising and to accredit franchisors that meet these standards. Many organisations say they are ‘franchisors’ - not all are, and not all are accredited by the bfa.
- From humble beginnings back in 1977 with eight founding member franchisors, the bfa has grown to represent more than 250 franchise brands today, with around 15,000 franchisees operating in a bfa-accredited franchise network across the UK.
- The UK franchising industry has a turnover of £9.65 billion, employs more than 330,000 people and is responsible for introducing approximately 3,000 new small businesses into the UK each year.
- Last year 95 per cent of all franchisees reported profitability, with 97 per cent of franchisees operating their business for five years or more reporting profitability.
