DJH Mitten Clarke is a firm of Chartered Accountants based in Cheshire specialising in providing accounting, taxation, payroll, business development and related services to the UK franchise sector. We are proud to be members of the BFA acting on behalf of a considerable number of franchisees and are the nominated or preferred accountants for several franchise networks. Our team of 10 dedicated professionals, headed up by Desirie Lea QFP, work with over 400 franchise businesses (both franchisors and franchisees), to deliver advice and guidance to owners on a daily basis. Desirie has several year’s post qualified experience and specialises in the franchise sector acting on behalf of clients across the length and breadth of the UK. Supported by our dedicated franchise team, Desirie is passionate about providing the best possible advice to clients and works closely with owners to help them grow their business. This includes responding to queries and phone calls outside normal office hours which clients really appreciate.

Acknowledged as a specialist in the field of franchise accounting, Desirie was delighted to have recently been asked by the BFA to be a Judge in the British Franchise Awards. In addition to her accountancy qualifications, she has also attained the Qualified Franchise Professional accreditation (QFP) from the BFA and achieved Highly Commended in the 2015 Accountancy Age Practitioner of the Year awards.

At DJH Mitten Clarke we promote Cloud based accounting software which enables clients to review accounting information online with their appointed team member or ‘Buddy’. This enables any issues to be resolved quickly and efficiently thereby saving the client time and money. We also hold pre-year-end tax planning meetings to spot opportunities and ensure that clients pay only the minimum amount of tax required.

Our franchise team regularly attend franchise networking events and conferences and provide training seminars themselves on various aspects of accounting, payroll and debt management issues which are free to attend. Our fixed fee package also includes telephone support on routine matters to all clients.  We also offer a monthly coaching session to new franchisees for the first 3 to 6 months of their franchise journey (held via zoom, on the phone or in person), and this enables any potential problems to be highlighted and rectified as quickly as possible.

Our experience of working in the franchise sector enables us to provide clients with a balanced mix of technical and commercial advice whilst at the same time remaining aware of the intricacies of this field. We aim to be there for you from starting up your own franchise business, to perhaps becoming a franchisor yourself, growing the business and then advising you on an exit strategy – we can even help you to sell the business when the time is right! This extends from working with franchise owners who are completely new to business who require a hand-holding service in the early years, to working with established franchisors to help develop their network. Our aim is to be there every step of the way during the lifecycle of your business offering additional services such as bookkeeping and management accounts, advice on cloud based accounting software, tax advice and planning, treatment of goodwill, BACS accredited payroll, review of KPI’s to gauge progress and ensure that targets are being met, limited companies v sole trader, making tax digital (MTD), VAT, cash-flows and business plans. We also have specialist teams that can assist with quantifying Capital Allowances and R&D tax claims.


We offer a network wide accounting solution which includes an online accounting package. You and your franchisees will receive prompt management information which will help franchisees develop their businesses. By having a network supplier of accounting services, you will be able to benchmark your franchisees against KPI’s. This will enable you to focus on problem areas when you are speaking to your franchisees and help them improve those areas. A good accounting solution will also give you more detail and insight into your business and trends, and all these factors will be discussed in review meetings.
