Pirtek Racing’s Andrew Jordan is the 2013 champion in the Dunlop MSA British Touring Car Championships (BTCC) after an all-action final event of the season at Brands Hatch on Sunday. Following his first retirement of the season in race 2 of the three-race day, Jordan and the team had to dig deep to deliver yet another mighty performance to win the biggest prize in BTCC motor racing.
In dreadful weather conditions and in front of a huge audience, both live at the track and at home watching live on ITV4, Jordan went into the 30th and final race of the season from the very back of the grid, knowing that he had to get into the top 10 to seal the title.
As soon as the race started he was picking up places from 24th on the grid with a brilliantly measured performance. “The Indy part of the circuit was very slippery, but I was really pushing on through the quick stuff on the Grand Prix loop,” Jordan commented. By mid-race he was into the top 10. “I was on the radio asking if this was definitely enough. I was then taking it really steady and making the gear changes really slowly and staying off the kerbs.”
Enough it most certainly was. The emotions erupted as he took the flag, knowing that the title was won. “The main feeling was relief!” admitted Jordan. “To do it in the last race was a great way to do it. I’d rather have done it earlier, but that way made great TV! We also won back-to-back Independent and Independent Team titles. It’s been an amazing effort by everyone and we’ve finished 29 out of 30 races.”
As the champagne sprayed, Andrew paid tribute to everyone involved in the close-knit Pirtek Racing team. He also recorded his appreciation of the support from his major sponsor and all the associate sponsors who made the season possible. “Pirtek has been with us since 2004 and is the most loyal sponsor you could have. The Pirtek support is fantastic!”
Those associate sponsors include other franchisors, who like Pirtek have benefited from the exposure and brand awareness made possible by Jordan’s exceptional performance in taking the title this season. Regular print and online coverage has supplemented a national television audience of millions each race weekend, both here and abroad.
Revive! has sponsored Jordan since 2011, soon after he joined the Pirtek Team. Mark Llewellyn, managing director of Revive!, said: “We always knew Andrew had something special and it was clear he would give the works drivers a run for their money this year. But today he has absolutely blown us away. His skill, determination and dedication are breath-taking. He has nerves of steel and it has been an absolute privilege to support him over the past two years.
“Corporate sponsorship is all about finding a good brand match and we couldn’t have hoped for better.”
Jordan’s debut BTCC season was in 2008 and he made BTCC history as the youngest ever driver to qualify on pole position. After claiming the BTCC independent drivers’ prize at the close of 2012, he had his sight firmly set on the overall title. He performed consistently all season and has been widely regarded as a benchmark competitor by seasoned drivers – and now next year he’ll be the defending champion!
