Diljit Brar, Managing Director of Goldex Investments and a major franchisee of Costa Coffee, is the winner of the Multi-unit Franchisee Award in the prestigious annual bfa HSBC Franchise Awards 2018.
Run by the British Franchise Association (bfa), these widely-respected awards recognise both franchisees and franchisors who have demonstrated outstanding business acumen, innovation and achievement. Franchising is a simple relationship between two parties, the franchisor who owns the brand and business system, and the franchisee who contracts to run a copy of that business in a local area.
The bfa HSBC Franchise Award winners were announced last night, 28th June 2018, at the ICC in Birmingham at an exclusive black-tie ceremony held between day one and two of the bfa Annual Conference. The Multi-unit Franchisee Award recognises franchisees with more than three units in the same network, that can prove their evolution and strategy has demonstrated sustainable growth across their portfolio. The judges were particularly impressed by the franchisee Diljit Brar’s portfolio of 75 stores.
For eight years in a row, Costa Coffee has been voted as the ‘Nation’s Favourite Coffee Shop Brand’ by UK coffee consumers in an independent survey by industry experts, Allegra. Costa firmly believes that its franchisee partners have been pivotal in the success of the company over the past decade and that it is their passionate delivery of standards and customer experience, and accelerating stores growth in the UK high street and beyond, that has contributed to this recognition with consumers.
Over the past few years, Diljit has shared his views and experience in a number of projects which engage the franchisee estate with the current market trends. His input at the Costa franchise steering group is highly valued and proven in helping to shape the future of the brand and, importantly, the franchisor-franchisee relationship.
Goldex and Diljit have also been very proactive with The Costa Foundation since its inception in 2007, Diljit has motivated teams to participate in the annual “3 Peaks Challenge” and to join with him to run several marathons along with many other fundraising initiatives.
Diljit Brar puts the ongoing success of this large multi-site franchise down to the knowledge he has gained and believes it is the team and people in the business that make it what it is. Their many achievements have been recognised including Franchise of the Year, Store of the Year, becoming the largest Costa Franchisee, Partnership of the Year, Fundraiser of the Year, Whitbread Ambassador and Bexleyheath Franchise Business of the Year. Their most recent achievement, raising £150,000 to build a school in a coffee community in Ethiopia for 1000 children, is particularly a proud one for everyone at Goldex.
On winning the Multi-Unit Franchisee Award Diljit said, “Goldex and I are very grateful to be awarded as winners of the bfa Multi-unit Franchisee category; I would like to thank all my team at Goldex, without whom this would not be possible. The bfa award is the biggest accolade to win in our field and we are very proud winners.
“I would also like to thank all at Costa for their help and support over the years and I would like to congratulate Jason and Lee, the other two finalists in our category.”
Pip Wilkins, CEO of the bfa, said, “It’s over forty years since the bfa was launched specifically to develop ethical franchising in the UK, and I am proud of the way the sector has grown in that time, with the industry’s turnover exceeding £15bn – that’s 1% of the UK’s GDP! If you are running a successful business or want to be your own boss, then franchising is a valid and important option for accelerating your business growth or starting your own commercial venture.”
“The bfa HSBC Franchise Awards 2018 are a celebration of the broad church that is franchising in the UK, from a large multi-national to a lifestyle business, as franchisors come in all shapes and sizes. Every year it’s really great to see the excellent work our members demonstrate through their entries and the quality has never been higher. I would like to thank all our finalists in this year’s awards and congratulate our winners, it was an extremely hard job for the judges to separate them. It great to see such a wide range of businesses represented as it really does illustrate the depth and breadth of franchising opportunities in the UK.
“Diljit is an exceptional winner of the Multi-unit Franchisee award as he has demonstrated how you can grow a franchise business into a major enterprise through the multi-unit model. I would like to congratulate him on winning this award, and wish him the best of luck for the future.”
Andrew Brattesani, UK Head of Franchising for the Awards’ sponsor HSBC, said, “HSBC is delighted to be once again supporting these industry leading franchise awards. Franchise businesses are often the hidden engine of business growth in the UK and it is essential to highlight the important contribution both large and small businesses make to our economy. It is also important to showcase to people that they can run their own businesses and if you don’t want to go it alone, or haven’t got a strong business idea, you can still be successful and become your own boss, as together we thrive.”
