Former Team GB international swimmer Angela Wilson (née Pendrich) today launched Swimstylers, a creative and new swimming programme designed for children aged 4 months to 12 years of age devised in conjunction with CHF Media (Daisy & Ollie, Pip Ahoy!).
Swimstylers launches in fourteen of Angela’s swimschool franchises in locations across the country including Kent, London, Essex, East Sussex, Surrey and Hampshire. The launch of the programme was held at London’s prestigious BAFTA Club on Friday 8th June. In attendance was Sabrina Sinha who, along with her sister Natasha, were both taught by Angela and are now top performing athletes in their fields. Sabrina is Junior GB middle distance and cross-country champion, supported by Paula Radcliffe, while Natasha is an aspiring youth triathlete and World Aquathon Champion.
Angela began developing the Swimstylers concept 12 months ago, motivated to engage children and families to learn and enjoy swimming following Swim England’s July 2017 survey, which revealed 1 in 3 children cannot swim when leaving primary school and only 36% of schools currently provide effective lessons that reach national curriculum standards.
Angela, who competed in the 1994 Commonwealth Games and has been teaching swimming since 2002, has worked closely with CHF Media to develop a series of inspirational characters. Each character has been created to inspire and motivate all young swimmers and also bring to life her unique method of teaching, tried and tested through two generations of her family, which involves teaching professional strokes from day one in the pool.
The aim of the Swimstylers programme is to teach children to swim with the correct technique whilst teaching them valuable life skills to help them improve their physical and emotional well being. They will also learn water safety and respect.
Swimstylers has five inspirational animated child characters which help to structure the five-staged programme, making the programme encouraging and engaging. The hope is that children aspire to be like the characters and improve with style, confidence and technique as they progress through the character badge-based system.
Angela Wilson comments: “Swimming for me is not only a life-saving skill but a life enhancing one. Everyone can benefit from being able to swim properly and its hugely concerning to hear frightening statistics that show so many of our children don’t have this essential life skill.
“Swimstylers is about making swimming engaging and a priority for us all. We’re completely delighted with the response to the characters we have created so far and have high hopes that it will make a big difference nationwide.”
Adrian Wilkins, CEO of CHF Enterprises, comments: “After thoroughly researching existing badge based swimming programmes, we noticed a huge gap in the market for a programme that was championed by human characters and role models children could actually relate to. Typically existing badge based programmes reward with stages such as starfish, dolphin, shark etc but the characters in Swimstylers genuinely reflect the journey as the children progress within the water. Our award winning creative team worked closely with Angela and we are excited to be revealing something truly fresh and modern, to help create strong and healthy swimmers of the future.”
Joseph Choong, Team GB Olympic Modern Pentathlete, and one of Angela’s former students comments: “Learning to swim under Angela is one of my first memories as a young kid. I remember being taught by her as I struggled to my 100m swimming distance award at the age of five, and I still went to see her for technique workshops when I made my first national times more than ten years later.
“Angela’s swim coaching formed the platform for my career as a professional Modern Pentathlete during which I had the honour of representing Great Britain at the 2016 Rio Olympics and reaching World Number 1 as an U19. Swimming is undoubtedly an incredibly important life skill, and to this day it is still my strongest discipline in a modern pentathlon. For me, it all started under Angela’s guidance, and I would highly recommend her swim coaching.”
The Swimstylers brand will be rolled out to all of Angela’s existing swim schools and franchises, and could be made available to be used in schools nationwide to primary and swimming schools across the UK. Angela’s Swim School is a member of the British Franchise Association and Angela has been selected as a finalist in the HSBC Franchisor of the Year 2018 category, due to be announced on 28th June 2018.
