25 June, the ICC, Birmingham

Franchisor of the Year Awards 2015Over 360 guests witnessed the largest Franchisor of the Year awards yet held as the sector came together to celebrate the success of 19 impressive businesses over the last 12 months.

The community aspect of franchising was perfectly highlighted by the fact that the majority of attendees to the black-tie dinner having no direct connection to the finalists, attending simply to support their peers. Some of the finalists, including those in the same category as each other, even requested to share the same table for the evening.

Franchisor of the Year Awards 2015With champagne and evening gowns in full flow, it was Agency Express who took home top honours on the night after being named 2015 bfa HSBC Franchisor of the Year Gold Award winners, edging out Driver Hire, winners of the Silver Award, and Bronze Award winners TaxAssist Accountants. All three have experienced a remarkable year, with record results and franchisee turnover at an all-time high.

Franchisor of the Year Awards 2015Judges described the process of selecting the winners as the most difficult they’d yet experienced. With chair of the panel, Cathryn Hayes, being part of the process for more than 20 years, that’s an indication of the calibre of this year’s finalists in each of the five categories.

The most raucous celebration of the evening surely went to Troy Tappenden, managing director of Dream Doors, winners of the Franchisee Recruitment Award, who eventually reached the stage with colleague Alex Waite after a series of cheers, roars and hugs along the way; it’s fair to say it meant a lot to both of them.

Having pioneered a new offering in the convenience store sector, One Stop Franchise was rewarded for its dedication to standards from the outset, named Emerging Franchisor of the Year just 18 months after launching the franchise model. The business has now been commended for its franchising results as well as its retail skills.

Franchisor of the Year Awards 2015In the Award for Innovation category it was a story of modernising a 50-year-old business that claimed the title for Dyno, following significant changes to the fabric of its franchise model which have had a big impact on franchisees. The win eased the pain for national franchising manager Nigel Dawson, who collected the award in a sling following a recent accident.

No strangers to these evenings, it was Home Instead that came out on top in the Award for Customer Focus thanks to building a business on the strength of relationships between franchisor, franchisees, staff and clients. It’s the company’s fifth accolade in these awards since 2009, a run which includes being named Gold Award winner in 2013.

Showcasing the impressive feats being achieved by franchisors, the standards required to be a finalist, let alone a winner, rise each and every year. It seems certain that the judges will have no easier a task in 2016…
