The industry is huge and as such we work with the motor trade, educational & health sector, retail, office and many other commercial environments on a daily basis.

Commercial Carpet & Upholstery Cleaning

The Commercial Services model is built around the delivery of carpet, upholstery and hard floor cleaning / maintenance programmes – aimed at businesses & organisations. Typically, the average job commands a higher ticket price, and the work would be carried out at times that minimise disruption on that site. Ongoing maintenance programmes provide regular income from those clients that value the appearance of the premises, creating a welcoming environment for their customers and a great workspace for their employees.

As a contract services franchisee, you’ll manage your time between business development duties, seeking out new contracts, working with the marketing team on campaigns and managing your existing contracts or staff who handle this for you. You’ll build a strong, customer-focused team around you to handle enquiries, manage client relationships and quality control at your customers’ sites.
You’ll start off working closely with residential customers cleaning carpets, upholstery, curtains and sofas, as well as hard floors. As your business develops, you’ll start to employ a team to handle enquiries and booking appointments, you’ll employ a second or even third technician and purchase multiple vans and your investment in staff and equipment will pay dividends.
Similar to residential services, you’ll work closely with your customers but this time, they’ll be hoteliers, restaurant owners, pub landlords, estate agents or facilities management companies and you’ll be contracted to provide more regular carpet, upholstery and hard floor cleaning. As with residential services, as your business develops, you’ll employ a team to handle larger contracts and enquiries from long-term, happy customers who soon come to trust and rely on the service you deliver time and time again.
Disaster Restoration Services
A 24/7/365 business, you’ll be trained to provide specialist services, including cleaning following flood and fires for both national insurance contracts and locally developed clients. Tom explains: “Following my redundancy I decided it was time for a new direction and perhaps even to strike out on my own. After a lot of research on the web and by talking to Business Gateway I concluded that franchising was the safest route when starting up alone.”
When searching for a franchise, Tom set criteria that would aim to satisfy his long-term goals. These included finding a franchise that was both recession- and technology-proof, could grow year upon year, and continue to function whilst he was on holiday.

“My business first began in the East Strathclyde area in June 2003. The contracts here are mainly with small businesses. When the Glasgow area became available I was keen to expand my business to cover a broader range of clients and in November 2006 purchased the Glasgow territory. Glasgow was, and is, a lucrative area, with bigger blue-chip businesses. It was an accruement to purchase an additional territory.”
Things have gone very well for him. “From starting out from scratch, with a desk, phone and the yellow pages I am very happy with where I am today!” he confirms.

Richard Mason is the owner and operator of carpet and upholstery cleaning and disaster restoration services franchises, where he covers the Leeds, Dewsbury and York areas.
Richard says: “I have been running my ServiceMaster Clean franchises for six years now, initially purchasing two Leeds areas from a retiring licensee and, since then, adding the Dewsbury area and part of the York area from other franchisees. I have also added a further four areas.
“Before ServiceMaster, I was involved in insurance building restoration work with another franchisor. I also employ a lady, who deals with the administrative side of the business, on a part-time basis.
“My technicians and I enjoy the work, because of the variety. No two days are the same, neither are two jobs. Many of these people we have come to know well, and have become friends as well as clients.

“The initial training course was very good, and we often return to attend the various training courses available. In addition, we have technical help and support available at the end of a telephone, day or night, should we need it. Regional meetings allow us an opportunity to meet our neighbouring franchisees, all of whom we get on well with. Indeed, we have all worked together on some larger jobs at times.

Jayne Gethin is one of only a handful of female business owners within the ServiceMaster Clean network and has been running her contract services business in south-west Wales since 2005. Jayne has built the business from a standing start to a team of over 100 in that time and is well on the way to reaching its target of £1m turnover.
The business began as a result of Jayne’s husband taking voluntary redundancy in 2004, which led to Jayne looking into franchise opportunities. Once the intensive training academy at ServiceMaster’s head office in Leicester was complete, Jayne commenced trading from a box room in her house and landed a number of contracts within the first few weeks of trading.

Starting as a cleaner herself, Jayne has experience in each role and now manages a highly successful, customer focused operation. The company provides a strong induction and training programme and conducts regular one-to-one and skills analysis meetings to up-skill its workforce to ensure clients receive the best service. Jayne quickly established an internal management structure to create an efficient and profitable business. To handle the increase in business by October 2007, Jayne moved her operation into an industrial unit at a new development site at Llandarcy. Chris Knight is owner and operator of ServiceMaster Clean Coventry West and North Birmingham, where he provides professional carpet and upholstery cleaning and disaster restoration services to homes and businesses in his area.
“Before ServiceMaster Clean I owned another franchise with my father,” says Chris. “He had had it for approximately 20 years and I ran it with him for 10 years. We specialised in drainage and plumbing.
“I wasn’t necessarily looking to buy a new franchise; I was more focused on buying an existing business I could get my teeth in to and grow in time. When I saw the ServiceMaster Clean franchise for sale I read up on the business and found it very interesting. The good thing with regards to franchising is, if done properly, you have a support network around you, allowing you to serve a larger number of customers than your average stand-alone business. “I spent about 5 months looking at businesses for sale. I looked very seriously into buying a gym, and then glanced over the idea of buying a factory that made sausages! “After reading up on what ServiceMaster Clean did I found it all quite interesting; I also wanted a challenge. The business I purchased was a lot smaller than I had been used to and the work as a whole was also quite different. “I’ve had the business for nearly two years now and it has grown in all aspects. It’s been very hard work, with a lot of hours spent in the office, but it is all worth it. We are also in the process of moving to larger premises.
