Hamilton Pratt has announced that Simon Jobson, a property lawyer who has worked at Linklaters and Berwin Leighton Paisner, has joined the law firm.
Simon obtained his degree in engineering from Oxford University before qualifying as a lawyer and has been involved in a significant number of property transactions involving franchise networks. He says: “Whilst on the face of it the property aspects of commercial transactions are the same whether they relate to franchise businesses or not, there are particular requirements and issues that are unique to franchising and which need to be addressed.
“In particular franchisors very often retain an interest whether in the form of an option over franchise premises or actually retain an ownership interest and, therefore, franchisors need to ensure that any property work has been undertaken properly. From a franchisee’s perspective they are very often unaware of issues relating to commercial property, how to appoint lawyers and so on and it is for the franchisor, as part of its assistance and guidance to franchisees to help them on this.
“I am delighted to be joining…to advise on the property aspects of franchising. Hamilton Pratt has a market dominant position in the UK, representing nearly 30% of the full members of the British Franchise Association.”
John Pratt, senior partner at Hamilton Pratt, said: “We were coming under increasing pressure from our clients to provide a one-stop shop which included property advice. Simon immediately clicked with the rest of the team because of his unstuffy, no-nonsense ‘get it done’ approach. Simon will be a very valuable member of the team.”
