Local mechanic Ryan Dunn has just become North Devon’s ‘Mac Man’. Born and bred in Barnstaple, Ryan always had a passion for cars and left Park School at 16 to go to North Devon College where he did an Apprenticeship in Mechanics, working at Nissan for 3 years with a 2 year stint at a local garage, Adams & West before going back to Nissan, and then another three years at Seat.
One of six boys, three of whom work for themselves, Ryan was always keen to follow in their footsteps and then a friend gave him the idea of running his own Mac Tools business.
“The idea of becoming a Mac Man and being my own boss really appealed to me, and I wanted to support my family better. I’ve spent all my working life in garages and working with other mechanics, so I understand what they need from a tool supplier.”
“I also thought it was time to give more choice to mechanics and businesses in North Devon.”
Once Ryan had signed up things went really fast, beginning with a 10 day stint over at the company’s Tool School in Ohio, US, for some intensive training.
“What an experience! It was hard work and the days were long but the Americans are so enthusiastic so it was good fun too. I then did some more training in the UK and then I was out on the road.”
Paul Clegg, Recruitment Manager, Mac Tools: “We’re delighted that we can now supply our tools in North Devon. Ryan knows the local area really well and is also an experienced mechanic so I’m sure his business will go from strength to strength. We’re with him all the way.”
