Returning judge and franchise consultant Euan Fraser joins us to discussed changes in franchising throughout the pandemic and what the bfa HSBC British Franchise Awards means to him:
What is the one piece of advice you would give to those looking to become a franchisee or franchisor?
Do your homework properly! For franchisees – talk to as many existing franchisees as you can – does the franchisor deliver on their promises? For Franchisors – make sure that you understand the cost of setting up a franchise network and do it because you want to deliver great customer service…not to avoid investing in the business!
Have you seen any reoccurring themes for the advice you are being sought for as a franchise consultant?
Oh yes – Get me franchisees! I’m seeing more and more franchisors who want to opt out of the hard graft of doing their own recruitment. A franchisor is going to sell the concept far better than a consultant. It’s raises a big question for me.
How have you witnessed both the Covid-19 pandemic and Brexit impacted franchisee recruitment for franchisors?
There’s been a lot of interest in franchising, but I haven’t seen it transfer into franchises being awarded…yet. I think that will take time to work its way through.
In your eyes, why are business awards so important to organisations and why should they apply?
There are hundreds of franchise systems across the UK. Some are great; some are terrible. Every franchisor wants to stand out. What better way than through winning an industry-recognised award? I think they shout out that your system is a good one.
What does being a judge for the British Franchise Awards mean to you?
Honestly, it’s hard work….4 full days of listening to business owners is exhausting! Their passion is great and I learn so much but I’m exhausted by the end of it. On the other hand it’s an honour to be involved and I love giving something back to the franchising community.
Why are you so passionate about franchising?
Who said I was passionate…I trained as a Chartered Accountant – we’re not known for our emotion….!!! No, I am passionate about it because I love the collegiate approach to growing a business, both within the franchise network and across the industry. People are so willing to exchange ideas and experiences which is a refreshing change from the corporate desire for secrecy, smoke and mirrors!
Join us in celebrating franchise strength at this year’s ceremony at the Vox, Birmingham on 30th November.
