Tutor Doctor win prestigious national business Innovation Award
July 11, 2018
Tutor Doctor, a leading online tutoring service provider in the UK offering person to person educational home tuition, has been announced as the winner of the Innovation Award category at the prestigious annual bfa HSBC Franchise Awards 2018.
Run by the British Franchise Association (bfa), these widely-respected awards recognise both franchisors and franchisees who have demonstrated outstanding business acumen, innovation and achievement. Franchising is a simple relationship between two parties, the franchisor who owns the brand and business system, and the franchisee who contracts to run a copy of that business in a local area.
The bfa HSBC Franchise Award winners were announced last night, 28thJune 2018, at the ICC in Birmingham at an exclusive black-tie ceremony held between day one and two of the bfa Annual Conference. The Innovation Award is a category for franchisors who demonstrate an ongoing commitment and investment in research and development, enabling franchisees to maximise efficiencies or attract a larger market. The judges were particularly impressed by Tutor Doctor’s online innovation ‘Bramble’ which revolutionises their business model, increasing tutor availability & capacity.
Bramble merges the audio and visual elements from best-in-class software like FaceTime and Skype, with a highly interactive Whiteboard that allows real-time, on-screen editing, annotation and a copy/paste/upload/import function for total immersion and connectivity between tutor and student. There are no delays – students and tutors see and hear each other’s actions as they happen. This enhances cognitive learning, problem solving and retention and recollection of knowledge. Bramble also offers greater flexibility on the time and location of tutoring, whether it is in-home, online or both.
At a home-based consultation, franchisees thoroughly assess a student’s needs and then carefully select the best-fit tutor based on their goals, personality and learning style. Tutors then visit students at home, or work with them via the new online platform, so that they can learn in the comfort of their own home, at a time of day that suits them. “For today’s busy families,” says Tutor Doctor President, Frank Milner, “This is a real benefit.”
With over 500 franchise units in more than 16 countries, Tutor Doctor is one of the fastest growing home-tutoring franchises in the world. Out of all global territories, the UK has shown the fastest growth in like-for-like sales since Alex Scotchbrook opened the very first UK Tutor Doctor in 2009.
Incorporating online learning into the Tutor Doctor model isn't about substitution, it's about improvement. Online tutoring enables more flexible learning and meets students in a familiar environment, which improves engagement, buy-in and overall experience. In addition, it limits disruption and provides valuable learning aids, such as recordings of all sessions which can be played back for revision.
Bramble’s implementation also enables franchisees to share tutors across the network. If a student needs help in a subject for which a franchisee doesn't have a tutor, they can reach out to the network and retain the sale.
On winning the Innovation Award Tim Morris, Director of Global Franchise Support for Tutor Doctor, said, “It’s an honour to have won in a category filled with such high-calibre franchisors. We’re incredibly proud that our innovation and constant drive to push the Tutor Doctor brand forwards has been recognised in this way. This award is a testament to our incredible team at head office and their ongoing commitment to each and every franchisee in the network. At the heart of our business sits the ethos that ‘anyone can learn’ and the addition of our award-winning online learning platform is yet another way in which we can make a difference in students’ lives, across the UK.”
Pip Wilkins, CEO of the bfa, said, "It’s over forty years since the bfa was launched specifically to develop ethical franchising in the UK, and I am proud of the way the sector has grown in that time, with the industry's turnover exceeding £15bn - that's 1% of the UK's GDP! If you are running a successful business or want to be your own boss, then franchising is a valid and important option for accelerating your business growth or starting your own commercial venture."
“The bfa HSBC Franchise Awards 2018 are a celebration of the broad church that is franchising in the UK, from a large multi-national to a lifestyle business, as franchisors come in all shapes and sizes. Every year it’s really great to see the excellent work our members demonstrate through their entries and the quality has never been higher. I would like to thank all our finalists in this year’s awards and congratulate our winners, it was an extremely hard job for the judges to separate them. It great to see such a wide range of businesses represented as it really does illustrate the depth and breadth of franchising opportunities in the UK.”
"Tutor Doctor have implemented world-class online tutoring platform, ‘Bramble’, which has catapulted their franchisees ahead of the competition, opening up a new revenue stream and offering an enhanced customer experience. It is really important for franchisors to invest in research and development, to maximise efficiencies or attract a larger market and Tutor Doctor has really shown how productive this can be. I’m delighted to be able to congratulate them on winning the Innovation Award.”
Andrew Brattesani, UK Head of Franchising for the Awards’ sponsor HSBC, said, “HSBC is delighted to be once again supporting these industry leading franchise awards. Franchise businesses are often the hidden engine of business growth in the UK and it is essential to highlight the important contribution both large and small businesses make to our economy. It is also important to showcase to people that they can run their own businesses and if you don’t want to go it alone, or haven’t got a strong business idea, you can still be successful and become your own boss, as together we thrive.”
