One Stop officially Franchise Retailer of the Year!

Winning Gold in Grocer Gold Awards

One Stop is celebrating after scooping gold as ‘Franchise Retailer of the Year’ in the Grocer Gold Awards following the prestigious ceremony last night (Tuesday, 5th October), held at the Guildhall in London.

It was a fantastic night for the convenience store retailer which has worked tirelessly over the past eight years to offer the very best package to its 240 franchise stores, which form part of its 950-store estate.

One Stop beat off stiff competition to gain the sought-after accolade and shines a light on the extraordinary achievements that One Stop and its franchise partners have made to drive business forwards, especially since the outbreak of Coronavirus in early 2020.

Jonny McQuarrie, One Stop managing director, said “It’s an absolute honour to receive this award on behalf of everyone who makes up the One Stop brand. It is testament to the extraordinary amount of work that the team have put into making our franchise partnership the very best in the business. To win The Grocer Gold awards demonstrates that the top industry professionals think the same.

“I would like to thank our phenomenal colleagues, including our franchise partners, who are an extension of our own core team and are at the heartbeat of our operations.  Thank you to our customers who have always voted with their feet, alongside those who chose One Stop from the finalists; we couldn’t be more delighted.”

One Stop was recognised in several areas, having made significant improvements to its operations, despite Covid. One Stop was able to demonstrate an immediate level of commitment and response to its colleagues and customers in the wake of the pandemic and within 10 days had installed splash screens across all the estate, sourced over the necessary amount of hand sanitiser and face masks within days, plus donated a large amount to over 100 support groups in its communities.

Whilst delivering one major project may present a challenge, particularly in a changing retail climate, surrounded by uncertainty, One Stop also stayed on its growth and improvements track and delivered multiple system transformations, including a new communication strategy for clearer and quicker communication sharing; online fulfilment changes to allow franchisees to delivery directly to customers through Snappy Shopper and Deliveroo and a reactive supply chain overhaul to offer a 6-day delivery service with ‘single pick’ availability.

Underpinning all of this, in just three months, the technology team implemented infrastructure changes which would normally take over three years which included: 

  • A new state of the art EPOS platform, changing the way retailers work in all areas of sales, stock control, cashing and reporting
  • A new cloud-based retail system aimed to de-risk hardware failures and reduce downtime
  • A new order fulfilment and replenishment tool using world class algorithms, to predict stock capability based on sales, seasonal changes and events in the local area
  • Installation of improved Wi-Fi and firewalls leading to considerable operational efficiencies

Mark Everitt, Finance, Franchise and Technology Director at One Stop was just as delighted with news of winning gold at the awards and commented: “Tonight we have had the absolute best result and as a business we couldn’t be prouder to hold this award. “The franchise partners have worked tirelessly over the last year, to ensure customers are safe where they shop, maintaining a high level of availability and range of food and drink, while always giving back to the communities that they serve within. We can’t thank them enough.

“We had strong growth plans for our franchise operations and then Covid hit. We could have put a number of projects to one side, but we chose to work through and committed to each one, adapting as quickly as we could with everything happening around us.

“With convenience stores becoming the ‘go to’ shopping destination in 2020 and convenience store ‘trust’ at a seven year high with customers, these huge changes have allowed us to grow to the needs of our customers and transition the stores, so they are as efficient and offer the highest level of service as possible. The growth of our franchise stores are key to us as at One Stop and this recognition will allow us to partner with the best franchisees to continue our growth plans and further the excellent reputation of the brand.”
