Pizza franchise Papa John’s has celebrated the completion of a community project at the Buszy in Milton Keynes, the venue for Make a Difference (M.a.D), a not-for-profit social enterprise and community interest company which helps young people in the town.
To mark the occasion, the mayor of Milton Keynes, councillor Catriona Morris, was welcomed to cut the ribbon at a grand opening ceremony for a special Papa John’s-funded redevelopment project at the venue.
“M.a.D.’s Milton Keynes location is known as the Buszy because it has been created from the regeneration of a disused bus station,” explains Dave Galvin, UK franchise sales manager, Papa John’s. “The Buszy needed our help to develop disabled access and refurbish a 40-foot concrete square known as the beach hut. We have provided funds, staff and sponsorship from our suppliers to develop the required access and refurbish the area. In addition, we were able to donate £1,000 to the project for on-going work. It is great to be able to give something back to the local community that has supported the company over the years. We were also delighted that councillor Catriona Morris gave up her time to join us at the grand opening ceremony.
“The venue has become an award-winning cultural and arts hub, offering groundbreaking cinema, art, creative space, live music, performance, events space and facilities. However, Milton Keynes is also the home of the Papa John’s factory where the ingredients to make our famous 100% fresh dough come together, so what better place to serve up helping hand to our community and at the same time celebrate hitting our 200th UK store opening?”
Denise Davis-Boreham, chief executive of M.a.D., commented: “We run four disability youth groups each week, for around 90 disabled people aged between eight and 25. We needed to raise funds to refurbish the disabled access and create an outdoor space which was suitable for activities in all weathers. Our current funds are devoted to delivering our regular programme of activities and so we can’t say how grateful we are for Papa John’s help and support on this important project and how it will enhance the lives and experience of all the young people who use the Buszy.”
Papa John’s is one of the largest pizza companies in the world, with over 3,900 stores worldwide. It recently achieved its target of 200 UK stores in operation by the end of 2012.
