The bfa announce the launch of the bfa HSBC UK Franchise Awards, 2018

The bfa and HSBC are excited to announce the launch of the annual bfa HSBC Franchise Awards, 2018! We would love to hear about your successful business, so we can recognise and share the very best with the entire UK franchise community. Our awards are the oldest and most celebrated in the £15bn+ UK franchise sector, running for nearly 30 years and widely covered in national, regional and trade media.

Both franchisor and franchisee award categories are now open for entry, with the franchisor awards closing on the 2nd of February, 2018 and the franchisee awards closing later, on the 30th of March, 2018. With a total of 10 separate awards to apply for directly, there are plenty of opportunities to win and the proven benefits to your business of even making the short list are undeniable. The awards ceremony itself is a fantastic occasion, showcasing successful franchising in the UK, but this event isn’t just about the champagne and canapes, it’s a great opportunity for networking, rewarding key individuals and celebrating ultimate success with your whole team. This year’s prestigious, black tie ceremony will take place on the 28th of June at the ICC Birmingham – book early to avoid disappointment, as space is limited!

Entering the awards is a great opportunity to take the time to consider all the milestones your franchise has achieved over the last few years. Many of the very best franchisors and franchisees are so busy building and protecting their franchises that they don’t always realise just what they have achieved. We know it is not always easy to take the time out of a busy work day to review and consider what works well for your business and for your franchisees – but writing an awards entry will ensure that you do just that.  Simply completing the application process will enable you to really focus on the areas where your franchise has proved successful, indeed the application will provide a valuable opportunity to appraise the core reasons behind the success of your business. It will often lead you to view your franchise in a different way and will encourage you to identify strengths and weaknesses as you go through the process.

Being able to prove that you have received recognition as one of the best in the franchise industry via the use of the bfa’s official awards logo on all your marketing materials can make it easier to attract top quality talent, investment and commercial opportunities, amongst many other benefits.

2016 Winner: Water Babies – bfa HSBC Franchisor of the Year. Paul Thompson, Founder of Water Babies, said, “To be recognised by your industry as being the top franchisor is a fantastic accolade. 2017 Winner: Hannah Drury, Caremark – Young Franchisee of the Year AND Franchisee of the Year Award. Hannah commented: “Honestly, I am shocked. 2017 Winner: Bluebird Care – Franchisor of the Year Award. Duncan Berry, Chief Operating Officer at Bluebird Care, commented: “Initiatives like the bfa HSBC Franchise Awards encourage the industry to maintain a high standard, and we are delighted to be part of this success. Our judging process is an opportunity for benchmarking your progress – the judging panel will compare your application with other franchises and therefore provide an opportunity to assess your position in relation to that of others, perhaps even your direct competitors. Even becoming a finalist brings its own advantages, as these prestigious awards are high profile, generating significant amounts of media coverage both within and without the sector, which will have a direct impact on your business. Winning these awards helps to differentiate you from competitors, and can provide a real commercial advantage.

FRANCHISOR

1.  Franchisor of the Year

The premium award for UK franchisors, representing excellence in franchising!

You will demonstrate a passion and commitment to ethical franchising. You will be able to evidence strong infrastructure and support for your network; ensuring franchisees have the best environment to succeed and reach their full potential. Judges will be looking for strategies that stand out from the crowd, those that are going above and beyond and can convey this along with substantial evidence to support positive network impact. The entire franchisee lifecycle should be a priority, ensuring franchisees are not only embedded well into the system but ongoing engagement allows them to realise a good return on their investment through resale.

ELIGIBILITY: FULL FRANCHISOR MEMBERS ONLY

2.  Emerging Franchisor of the Year

Building foundations for success!

You will be a business that has shown a real passion for your brand from day one. You will be able to demonstrate implementation of a strong infrastructure built to sustain growth and facilitate potential issues that can occur in infancy. Your journey into franchising should be that of careful consideration, both from a quality perspective and to ensure brand recognition. How does your market proposition stand out from the crowd?

ELIGIBILITY: FRANCHISOR MEMBERS IN THEIR FIRST 5 YEARS OF FRANCHISING FROM POINT OF RECRUITING THE FIRST FRANCHISEE

*Must have at least one franchisee that has traded for at least 6 months.

*Franchisors must evidence funds to support a growing business through their franchisor and/or company owned accounts

3.  Brand Awareness

Delivering exceptional PR and marketing strategies!

Your brand and network will be reaping the rewards of a well thought out strategy that is forward thinking, innovative and stands out in the market place. Consumers will be engaging with the brand on different levels and loyalty will be on the up. Judges are not looking for a one off campaign, they are looking for consistency and sustainability that can only be achieved by an ongoing commitment to understand the consumer market and how to effectively engage with it.

ELIGIBILITY: ALL FRANCHISOR MEMBERS 

4.  The Award for Innovation

Staying ahead of the competition!

You will demonstrate your ongoing commitment to invest in research and development. Your franchisees will be benefitting from this in their businesses as the customer experience and/or product and service broadens, enabling them to maximise efficiencies or attract a larger market. Your business could show examples of new digital strategy integration, fundamental changes to the model or diversifying into a new market. A new app or website is not enough for this category. The judges will be looking to understand why the change? How the change was implemented? And what impact this has had on not only the individual franchisees, but the network as a whole.

5.  The Award for Franchise Support

Ensuring franchisees are at the heart of the business!

You will be well versed in a framework which enables effective network management; from induction to opening the doors to trade, through to the first year progress against business plan and renewal meetings. Your people and processes will allow for early identification of risks and opportunities in the network and the ongoing relationship will be seeing positive financial impact. Judges are keen to see businesses that take a continual training, coaching and mentoring approach. How does your business ensure franchisee motivations are satisfied to encourage optimum performance and excellent engagement? How does this approach impact on the success of your network?

ELIGIBILITY: ALL FRANCHISOR MEMBERS

FRANCHISEE
Entry closes: 30/03/18.

1.  Lifestyle Franchisee of the Year

This award will showcase franchisees who may have bought into franchising to get a better work life balance or be their own boss and who, through their enterprising nature and determination to succeed, stand out from the crowd of other small business owners. The judges will be looking for strong franchisees who can demonstrate their passion, drive and commitment which has in turn led to exceptional results.

ELIGIBILITY: FRANCHISEES OF BFA MEMBERS WHO HAVE A BUSINESS TURNOVER OF 250K OR LESS

2.  Young Franchisee of the Year

This award recognises that franchising isn’t all about experience. Judges will be looking for a franchisee who has established a profitable franchise although they may not have come from a business background. Finalists will be dynamic, driven individuals who have achieved success beyond their years.

ELIGIBILITY: FRANCHISEES OF BFA MEMBERS WHO ARE AGED 30 YEARS OR UNDER.

3.  Customer Focus Franchisee of the Year

For franchisees that go above and beyond in their commitment to deliver the best customer experience in both B2B and B2C businesses. Winning accounts alone isn’t enough in this category. Loyalty, retention and winning back accounts will be able to be evidenced. Judges will be looking for exceptional examples that may include local customer and community strategies; or for franchisees to demonstrate how they have leveraged relationships and expertise to create a profitable business that delivers high-quality service, products and savings to their clients. Clear evidence of bottom line impact is key for this category.

ELIGIBILITY: ALL FRANCHISEES OF BFA MEMBERS

4.  Network Contribution

The finalists for this award will realise the benefit of being part of a network. Not only will they be focused and delivering great results for their own business but their support and willingness to share ideas with the wider network will be recognised. They will be considered a significant contributing partner to the franchisor and a respected mentor to the network, with this in mind their business and profile will have flourished.

ELIGIBILITY: ALL FRANCHISEES OF BFA MEMBERS.

5.  Multi-Unit Franchisee Award

For franchisees that have a clear passion for business and have become masters of managing management teams. They will have developed a trusted relationship with the franchisor based on success and commitment to the brand which has enabled them to obtain expansion opportunities. Judges are looking for franchisees to articulate their evolution and strategy that has seen sustainable growth across their portfolio. These franchisees are proving that franchising can be big business.

ELIGIBILITY: ALL FRANCHISEES OF BFA MEMBERS THAT HAVE A MINIMUM OF 3 UNITS WITHIN THE SAME NETWORK THAT HAVE SUCCESSFULLY TRADED FOR AT LEAST 12 MONTHS EACH.

6.  Franchisee of the Year – People’s Choice

An award to celebrate the best franchisee from all the award winners on the night, based on a vote from everyone in the room!   

ELIGIBILITY: MUST HAVE COME FIRST IN THEIR FRANCHISEE CATEGORY, AS ABOVE, ON THE NIGHT.
