“Over a quarter (27%) of secondary school pupils in England and Wales have had private tuition, a figure that rises to 41% for pupils in London” (Source: Sutton Trust, June 2023).

In addition, “the UK has seen an increase in the number of parents choosing to home educate their children. In 2024, a BBC investigation found the number of children moving to home education in the UK is at its highest level since the pandemic. Councils received almost 50,000 notifications in the last academic year from families wanting to take their children out of school. This does not include children already being home educated.” (Source BBC, June 2024).

Furthermore, “private tutoring firms say that VAT on independent school fees has led to a surge in demand for help with 11 plus entry tests for state grammar schools” (Source: The IPaper, Feb 2025).

Training

Frobel Education recognise that training is crucial for the success of any business thus staff development and the development of best practice is central to our values and business aims. We want you to succeed and so training is embedded into the package and starts long before you open the doors to your first student. At Frobel Education all franchises:

  • Are allocated a dedicated Franchise Manager
  • Receive initial Training and Induction
  • Are supported by Central Services

New franchise owners are supported from the outset, starting with the allocation of a dedicated Franchise Manager to work with Franchise Owners or their nominated person throughout the Franchise term. Having a dedicated person enables an important relationship to develop; your Franchise Manager will understand your business as much as you do and will be there with you every step of the way to success.

Initial training and induction are a crucial part of the preparation for success and Franchise Owners (or their nominated person/s) receive comprehensive initial training and induction. For initial training, up to three Managers attend training in our Barking Centre, IG11 8TG. This training covers the core operations of running your business and can take up to three months to complete. Franchise Owners will shadow an established and experienced Centre Manger to gain strategic and operational ‘know how’ and expertise of systems, processes, policy and procedure. This training is overseen by your dedicated Franchise Manager, who signs off the competencies listed in your ‘How to Run Your Centre Manual’. Franchise owners are supported to be able to cascade necessary training to members of their team/s.

Your Franchise is supported by our Central Service Team, based in our Barking Centre. Our experienced Central Service Team delivers much of the induction and ongoing training and is contactable by phone and/or email for ongoing queries and requests for support.

What will I do as a Franchisee

According to John Constable: “The world is wide; no two days are alike, nor even two hours” and education is very similar! However, whilst no two days are the same when you work in education, the Frobel Formula two-hour tuition sessions will be the same and there will also be core activities completed every day that form a routine.

A typical day will look like this for the Franchise Owner or their Centre Manager:

Opening the Centre:

  • Arrive early to unlock the centre, check facilities, and ensure everything is ready for the day (tuition rooms, computers, learning materials, etc.)
  • Check emails or messages from parents, staff, or franchise headquarters for any updates or urgent matters.

Staff Briefing:

  • Meet with tutors and administrative staff to discuss the day’s schedule, any special needs for students, and any ongoing issues.
  • Ensure tutors are prepared for the lessons and that all materials are in place.

Student Enrolment and Queries:

  • Review student enrolment for the week and following up on enquiries from prospective students or their parents.
  • Speak with parents about student progress or any concerns they may have.

Monitoring Standards and Student Progress:

  • Observe tuition sessions to ensure the quality of tutoring and the adherence to the franchise’s standards and 2-hour session plan.

Administrative Tasks:

  • Handle financial matters, such as tuition fee collection, payroll for staff, and budgeting.
  • Manage inventory (books, teaching materials, supplies, etc.).
  • Ensure that the tuition centre complies with local regulations and the franchisor’s guidelines.

Marketing and Promotion:

  • Work on marketing activities to promote the centre’s services, such as social media posts, local advertising, or inducting new enrolments.
  • Organise and attend parent meetings or events to discuss student progress or showcase success stories.

More Tuition Centre Oversight and Quality Assurance:

  • Oversee tuition sessions, which could involve stepping in to handle a tuition session if needed or checking in with tutors about student progress.
  • Address any immediate student or parent concerns.

Team Management:

  • Meet with tutors or administrative staff to address any challenges, such as student performance, staffing needs, or centre operations.
  • Offer feedback or professional development to staff.
  • Ensure you are responding to feedback from staff and student termly surveys.

Parent Communication:

  • Communicate with parents, whether it’s regarding student performance, upcoming events, or any changes in the schedule or tuition rates.
  • Schedule meetings with parents for consultations on their child’s progress.
  • Ensure you are responding to feedback from parent termly surveys.
