Walfinch home care in Welwyn & Bishop’s Stortford can now provide more complex clinical care to clients across Hertfordshire and Essex.

Managing Director Ian Thomson explains: “We can now support clients with higher or more complex care needs to remain safely at home, as we have been registered by the Care Quality Commission to provide Treatment of Disease, Disorder and Injury (TDDI).

“It means these clients need not always rely on external nursing services, so they enjoy better continuity of care, from carers they already know.”

Sophia O’Brien, Operations Director, says: “The TDDI registration means we can support people who need more complex care such as peg tube feeding, some kinds of respiratory care and wound care, stroke rehabilitation, and end-of-life pain relief, treatments typically provided in hospital or by District Nurses.”

The TDDI registration also means the care team can manage care for ongoing conditions such as multiple sclerosis (MS), Parkinson’s, diabetes and heart conditions, and give medicines and vaccinations, as well as managing catheters, feeding tubes and stomas and provide palliative care, in any setting.

Sophia says: “It means we can carry on caring for existing clients when they need more complex care, without handing them over to someone else, which can upset both the client and their family. Within two weeks of our TDDI registration, one client and their family were able to retain the Walfinch carers that they knew and trusted. We know there will be more.”

Our own Registered Nurse
Delphi McGlave, a registered nurse, was already working with Walfinch Welwyn & Bishop’s Stortford as a carer, as well as working as a nurse with the NHS. But the introduction of the new complex care services means that Delphi is now overseeing the training of other carers in the necessary clinical skills.

Delphi says: “As a registered nurse I’m passionate about delivering person-centred care that identifies deterioration early, supports people with complex needs and ensures the right care is provided at the right time. Our aim is to help people stay well and remain safely at home wherever possible.

“By identifying concerns early, coordinating care and working closely with clients, families and partner services, we can prevent unnecessary hospital admissions and improve outcomes.

“As the complex care service grows I will extend my hours. I am keen to develop my career with Walfinch, which will be working with the Royal College of Nursing (RCN) to maintain my registration.”

Ian adds: “Our new complex care capabilities will support local NHS services, help to prevent avoidable hospital admissions, cut down the need for patients to attend clinics for procedures, and could help speed up hospital discharges.

“It will also strengthen our partnerships with multidisciplinary healthcare teams, and will mean clients can receive high-quality, person-centred care from a trusted provider they already know, which will improve continuity of care and help ensure their physical and mental wellbeing.”
