Nine-year-old Bertie put his Mini First Aid training into action when he realised his little sister, Connie, was choking on an ice cube. After delivering two back blows, Bertie successfully dislodged the ice cube that was blocking her airway, saving his sister’s life.
Following the terrifying incident, Connie and Bertie’s mum contacted Prestbury CE Primary School to express her gratitude for providing the children with lifesaving first aid training through Mini First Aid East Cheshire.
What could have been a devastating situation became a story of bravery, quick thinking and the importance of teaching children first aid from a young age.
Bertie’s mum described the frightening moments when Connie began choking:
“I just wanted to say a massive thank you to school for providing the children with First Aid Training last year. A scary moment when Connie choked on an ice cube – luckily we were with her as it was silent choking. Connie was terrified and lost the colour in her face so quickly and I went into panic mode.
Bertie (Year 5) knew exactly what to do and hit her twice on the back and luckily it came out. He saved her life.
Very proud but even more grateful to school. Thank you once again.”
Bertie’s quick response is a powerful reminder that first aid is not just for adults. After taking part in first aid training with Mini First Aid at Prestbury CE Primary School, Bertie had the knowledge and confidence to recognise what was happening and take action when his sister needed him. When children are given the knowledge and confidence to recognise an emergency and take action, they really can make a life-changing difference.
Mini First Aid is an award-winning first aid training provider, delivering courses for parents and carers, workplace first aid qualifications and fun, interactive first aid classes for children as young as three.
Mini First Aid’s classes for children teach essential lifesaving skills in an age-appropriate and engaging way, covering how to respond to an emergency, CPR, choking and how to treat everyday injuries. Through practical activities, children learn how to stay calm, recognise when someone needs help and understand what they can do in an emergency.
Bertie’s story highlights just how important it is to make first aid accessible to children and give them the confidence to put their skills into practice when it matters most.
Mini First Aid offers children’s first aid classes for schools and clubs across the UK, helping the next generation become confident, capable lifesavers.
